Xiaomi Unveils SU7 Electric Car, Pioneering EV Technology and Performance

Chinese smartphone powerhouse Xiaomi has stepped into the electric vehicle (EV) arena, revealing its inaugural electric car, the Xiaomi SU7. The official images of the sleek electric sedan were released on the same day as the much-anticipated event showcasing the cutting-edge EV technology utilized in its development.

The SU in Xiaomi’s debut electric car stands for Speed Ultra, signalling its positioning as a high-performance model. Lei Jun, Chairman and CEO of Xiaomi, expressed the company’s ambition to create a dream car that rivals the likes of Porsche and Tesla, emphasizing a focus on customer desires.

Contrary to claims that the SU7 is not aimed at direct competition, it emerges as a strong contender in the electric car market, particularly against the Tesla Model S, boasting both impressive aesthetics and performance. Production of the EV has commenced at a Beijing facility owned by Chinese carmaker BAIC Group, with an annual capacity of two lakh vehicles.

The Xiaomi SU7, a four-door electric sedan, stands at 4,997 mm in length, 1,963 mm in width, and up to 1,455 mm in height, offering a spacious cabin with a 3,000 mm wheelbase. The EV will be available in multiple configurations, distinguished by the energy storage capacity of its battery.

Two battery options are introduced: a 73.6 kWh pack for the entry-level variant and a larger 101 kWh pack for the top-of-the-line version. Xiaomi’s proprietary CTB (Cell-to-Body) technology integrates the battery into the vehicle, enhancing structural rigidity and optimizing cabin space. The SU7 promises an impressive range of up to 800 km on a single charge, with a future variant, the V8, featuring a massive 150 kWh battery pack and a projected range of 1,200 km in 2025.

Performance-wise, the Xiaomi SU7 positions itself among the fastest EVs globally, featuring mass-produced motors—the V6 and V6S—with power outputs ranging from 299 hp to 374 hp. The electric sedan boasts a peak torque output of 635 Nm, and its top speeds range from 210 kmph for lower variants to 265 kmph for higher variants.

The SU7’s aesthetics draw inspiration from luxury sports cars, resembling the Porsche Taycan, with a sporty design, Aqua Blue exterior colour, and eye-catching alloy wheels. Xiaomi has also incorporated advanced autonomous driving features, including self-parking, utilizing high-resolution cameras, LiDAR, ultrasonic, and radar technologies, positioning Xiaomi’s autonomous driving capabilities at the forefront of the industry.
