Tata Group has entered into a partnership with the Gujarat state government to establish a giga-factory dedicated to manufacturing lithium-ion cells. The project involves an estimated initial investment of approximately 130 billion rupees ($1.6 billion).
In Gujarat, a groundbreaking giga-factory is set to commence operations, marking the first-ever production of lithium-ion cells in India. With an estimated initial investment of approximately Rs. 13,000 crores, this facility will have a production capacity of 20 GWh and is expected to create employment opportunities for over 13,000 individuals, both directly and indirectly. The state government’s commitment to fostering carbon-free and energy-efficient practices aligns with its efforts to promote electric vehicle production and mitigate carbon emissions.
In Gandhinagar, the Government of Gujarat and the Tata Group have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as a result of the recently developed Electronics Policy. The MoU was exchanged between the CEO of Tata Agaratas Energy Storage Solutions Private Limited, a subsidiary of the Tata Group, and the Secretary of Science and Technology of the Government of Gujarat, Mr Vijay Nehra. The signing took place in the presence of the Chief Minister.
According to a document posted on the Gujarat state government’s website, Gujarat has made impressive strides towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s net zero carbon emissions vision. This includes a firm commitment to achieve 100% adoption of electric vehicles and a significant reduction of 50% in carbon emissions by 2030. As the usage of electric vehicles increases, the demand for lithium-ion batteries will also grow. The establishment of Tata Group’s plant in Gujarat will position the state as a key player in the manufacturing of lithium-ion cells. Furthermore, it will receive support in creating a battery manufacturing ecosystem within the state.
The MoU signing ceremony witnessed the presence of notable individuals, including Chief Principal Secretary to the CM Shri K. Kailashnathan, Chief Secretary Shri Raj Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary Shri Pankaj Joshi, and senior officials from the Tata Group.
